Results, Not Excuses!

I’ll never forget the words painted on the wall of Mr. James Perkins’ fourth-grade classroom at George Mather Forbes School No. 4 in Rochester, NY: “Results, Not Excuses.” As a child, I didn’t fully grasp its weight—but I remembered it. Now, with life experience behind me, those words have become a benchmark for how I live and lead.

Why Do We Make Excuses?

It’s often easier to explain away failure than to face it. We justify our actions, blame others, or point to circumstances. But excuses are just gaps—gaps we create—that keep us from reaching our full potential. They’re rooted in fear: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being seen.

As Will Smith said in After Earth:

“Fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Fear is a choice.”

Fear keeps us stagnant. And stagnation breeds excuses. But here’s the truth: excuses don’t produce results. Only action does.

4 Ways to Turn Excuses Into Results

1. Own It.
Admit when you’re making excuses. No conviction, no change.

2. Write Them Down.
Post your excuses where you’ll see them—mirror, fridge, desk. Make them visible. Let them challenge you daily.

3. Ask: What Have These Excuses Given Me?
If the answer is “nothing,” it’s time to let them go.

4. Stop Making Excuses.
Period. Replace them with action, even small steps.
